Limestone of the Iblean Plateau

Technical sheet: Limestone of the Iblean Plateau

Sedimentary limestone, formed from the sedimented micrite during the ceozoic era, the upper-middle Miocene period. Bank material power from about 50 cm to about 90 cm.

Colour: from white to pearly white. If polished it has an excellent durability against the atmosphere elements, producing in this way the pearly white stone of Sicily.

In the natural grain form, it assumes a more artistic appearance formed by the colour deriving from the ageing, known as colore del tempo(the colour of time). It has o good tenacity to the traction and resistance to wear from abrasion.

Geotechnical characteristics of the homogeneous calcirudites:

  • Specific weight Kg 2,365
  • CaCO3 95%
  • Hardness (Mohs Scale) 7
  • Porosity homonym samples 0,18%
  • Imbibitions by immersion 0,38%
  • Simple compression strength KN 60
  • Flexure strength KN 12

Calcirudite products: Calcirudites are used in all aspects of the Iblean Baroque.

From freestones for the building trade to statues, pillars, capitals, flights of steps, altars, fountains, dentils, benches, stonewalls, hammered intermediate material etc.
